Public canals gated by land owners

It is time to take back our waters. These are our waters that are being stolen from us. I ask that each of you E-mail our reps and ask them to fight for our rights.

There are links on the following page:

Well I guess we need to find a "fishing" lawyer who wants to do some pro bono work on behalf of fishermen in our area. I also wonder if this sort of thing is happening in other areas?

What about the fishermen whom veer off from the main canals and waterways and end up in the marshes during duck season,in my duck ponds that are legally owned by my family for years.

I have nothing against fishing,i fish alot my self being from Lafitte, i was raised to respect the land owners and their rights to their property.Trespassing is against the law, and once you leave a navigable waterway and enter the marsh you are trespassing on someones property. Nearly all marshland in Louisiana is owned by someone, the state, or some major company.

I'm not looking to start any trouble on here, but there is always three sides to every story, your side, their side, and the truth. The duck season is only three months out of the year, and all me and most duck hunters ask is that the fishermen should respect our right to hunt ducks on our own land and not be disturbed by someone fishing.

The remaining of the year go fish where ever you want, and during the duck season if you find yourself in the marsh and you are asked by the landowner to leave, please respect the land owner and just leave.

Thanks,

LaDogMan

Welcome aboard ladogman.
You are right, private lands in the marshes should be respected...But I believe you are missing the point of my gripe. In this case i'm talking about the actual public navigable canals that have gates across them.

Take a look at www.segnette.com/access

Are you in touch with PAWRA (Public Access Water Rights Association) -- that's a group out of Gheens (other side of Lake Salvador)?

I have not been in touch with them. I actually haven't heard of them. I did a search on the web for them but only came up with 1 pdf file for them. Do they have a website?

They don't have a website.  PAWRA has its hands full right now with their local access issue.  Since the Golden Ranch plantation was sold, the public has been denied access to the Company Canal. This canal, constructed in the early 1800s as a public works project by the State via a quasi public agency historically served as the route to Lake Salvador from Gheens.  PAWRA is a local group that is in contact with state and national groups who support public access to waterways. Andy LeBoeuf is president of the group.
