As it stands right now, it does not appear that anything can be done. I firmly believe that no ploitician wants to touch the issue because their hands are in the pockets of the land owners.

A politician once told me that the land owners do it because of liability issues. (someone may have been hurt in the canal that runs thru their property) If it is navigable waters then I dont see how it is legal. The water is owned by the public. If I own a piece of property on both sides of a street, I can't block it. They shouldn't be able to block the canal either.

General Fishing and Hunting - Oil slick in Bayou Segnette waterway.

For those who have seen (what looks like) oil slick in the bayou, it has been investigated by JP enviromental and found to be from lignins and tannins. Below is some text from a flyer that they put out and should help explain.

This is a common, natural occurrence in Jefferson Parish because so much of our parish is built over what once were vegetated wetlands. The stains are caused by groundwater seeping to the surface.
The rust color is caused by the tannin in the groundwater – the same thing (tannic acid) that gives tea its brown color. The shiny or iridescent, webbed appearance is due to lignin in the groundwater. Both substances are byproducts of decaying vegetation. When the ground gets saturated and the water table rises, it runs out of the ground. This groundwater is natural and harmless.

The organic components in plants include compounds such as lignin and tannin. After living matter dies, it then goes through several stages of decomposition. During decomposition, the organic matter is broken down and released into the surrounding soil and can then move into groundwater via waterflow.
Whether you realize it or not, you are familiar with tannins. It may be from the historical use in leather manufacture. It may be from a cup of tea or from the taste that tannins impart to red wine. Even the flavor of chocolate is centered on tannin. And those of us in the south are familiar with the brown coloration of streams and lakes. Tannins are also a major component of most tree barks and nut shell husks and are important components of the leaves of most woody plants.
Lignin constitutes the material that fills out the spaces between the microfibrils of the cellulose in certain plant cells and it stiffens the cell structure. Lignins are the characteristic constituents of wood, but are also present in bark and straw.

They are going to build a new flood gate there.

Be careful at night. I passed there the other night and they had a oil boom extending out into the canal leaving only 10' opening on the west side of the canal. It appears that they have been doing work around the clock.

Also, the pipes across the road are for temporary pumps so they can re-do the pumping station.
